Mindfulness as a concept having its roots in Buddhism and name derived from Sanskrit word “Smriti” with a literal meaning of “that which is remembered”. This topic as a practice got its glory after 1979 when an Jon Kabat Zinn launched a program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”
– Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn (1991)
Though it’s an ancient old practice in Indian tradition but can be simply explained as paying attention to the present. It’s about giving full attention to the happenings within oneself and around. We should be measured wrong if we are connecting it to any religious belief or connecting it somewhere to spirituality. It is just about having awareness about the present. Our mind has a beautiful way of escaping from everything and putting oneself on automatic mode. This auto mode dominates our day chores and take us away from the little observation and experiences of our environment around us.
Every major revolution comes with its own pros and cons, same goes for our technology era too. Today nobody has time to look around, see emotions, listen feelings, smell weather and many other things happening each moment. This lead us to diminishing observations, lost visions and blank expressions as if searching for emoji in eyes too.
Mindfulness is an activity of searching the easily available pleasures around us, like listening to our own breath, understanding its rhythm, feeling its texture, temperature and the ease with which it makes us alive. It is about that Nano second pause which we insert in our daily life and can alleviate our mental health many folds with positivity and awareness. It helps us to read life between the lines. It gives us better understanding of people around us. Activation of mind develops capabilities to analyze and evaluate things in a better way which makes us more efficient, non-judgmental and empathetic. Human being embraced with compassion is the best creature made and mindfulness is a medium to achieve the same.
This article is not talking about the mindfulness meditation. It’s just about a way of life which makes us more alert, aware and alive. Mindfulness practice help us to cultivate neurons in a scientific way which draw our attention to the moment. It’s basically contemplating every moment consciously.
